I am lucky enough to travel a little bit with my day job but this year I have spent a lot of time in Scotland. I absolutely love Scotland, Edinburgh in particular because the people are so friendly and it’s nice to escape London for a few days, even though it’s always freezing up there.

I spent one night at the Macdonald Houstoun House near Livingston and although I’ve heard it’s haunted I had a really nice relaxing time. I would have loved to have stayed longer to be totally honest, it was so peaceful.

Arrival and Check in 2/5

After a short but rocky flight from London to Edinburgh the last thing I wanted was a long drive to the hotel, luckily before I knew it I had arrived at Houstoun House. Check in was quick and simple but the receptionist didn’t give much away. She didn’t tell me where breakfast was, where the restaurant was or even which way to go to find my room. Obviously I had to ask her 20 questions the most important being, “but do you have wifi?”

Room 4/5

As this is a traditional Scottish hotel I expected there to be a little bit of tartan but I didn’t expect the room to be so dark. I didn’t really like the décor but I did love the super long closet with mirrored doors, perfect for my outfit selfies. I also enjoyed the white bath robe hanging on the door and those matching towelling slippers too. My room was huge and had everything I needed including ironing facilities, a big TV, tea and coffee, complimentary sparkling and still water and a massive bed I could fit my whole family in.

Food 5/5

I had dinner alone in the restaurant downstairs and I’m glad because I finished my lovely meal possibly without coming up for air. Travelling always makes me so hungry so i was looking forward to dinner time. I had muscles to start, and salmon for my main course. I went for the two courses for £25 offer because I rarely eat dessert if chocolate fudge cake and ice cream isn’t on the menu, I am so basic when it comes to sweets. Call me crazy but I think fish tastes so much better in Scotland because its locally sourced and so fresh.

Breakfast the next morning was in the same restaurant and the cold buffet consisted of a continental breakfast, fruit, various types of granola and cereal , meats and yoghurt. They offer a hot breakfast menu too. Of course I went for the Macdonald breakfast (minus the black pudding) but including the potatoe scone, you really have to try this. My breakfast was made super quick and the waitress was so nice to me, making sure I had everything I needed and checking to see if I liked it.

Overall 11/15

I would definitely stay at this hotel again because it was the perfect location for getting to my head office for work, the food is amazing, the room was huge and the bed was so comfy. I didn’t enjoy the no lift situation with a massive suitcase but I did like the location being completely off the main road so there is no chance of the traffic keeping you awake at night.

This Scottish hotel is 100% It’s a Style Thing approved.

See you again soon, Macdonald Houstoun House
