My third New York experience was for my friend Dionne’s 30th birthday celebrations. Everyone in my friendship group has decided to do a big blow out holiday to mark this milestone birthday so expect a few more trips over the next two years.
Dionne chose the Marmara Hotel in Uptown Manhattan because the price was really good considering there were 10 of us in the group. After a few emails and clever negotiating Dionne managed to get two upgraded apartment suites on the 23rd floor, the views were so cool but a little bit scary out on the balcony. Seven of us stayed in the three bedroom apartment which consisted of three people sharing the master suite with an ensuite bathroom, and huge walk in closet, two people sharing the double room with ensuite bathroom and the remaining two sharing the twin room with separate bathroom. I picked the twin room which was smaller than the others but just so nice and cosy. The other three ladies in the group, Dionne’s mom and Aunties shared the two bedroom apartment across the hall.
The living space had a huge TV, sofa, arm chairs, coffee table, dining table and chairs and a kitchen with the biggest fridge I think I’ve ever seen. It was actually better than my own house and I really didn’t want to leave. It was so fun being roommates with one of my best friends too.
The staff at The Marmara were so sweet, on arrival we found they had left a complimentary bottle of wine, birthday card and birthday cake for the special lady, Dionne. I thought this was a great personal touch.
We had a few problems with cupboard doors and the main toilet not flushing but the staff sorted everything out efficiently and they were so helpful. There was no problem they couldn’t solve apart from the noisy road works outside which were pretty much on the doorstep. This woke me up daily despite being on the 23rd floor it was still so loud. Apparently they are making a subway station nearby.
On previous New York visits I have stayed at The Muse Hotel practically on Times Square because I prefer to be right in the thick of things and I don’t like wasting money on cabs. On my next trip I will stay closer to Times Square again if I don’t stay in Brooklyn because the subway journeys into the tourist areas and back to the hotel to change outfits for the evenings wasted valuable time and money.
Overall the Marmara is a lovely place to stay if you’re out all day and once you get back you stay in for the night. Hopefully they finish the annoying roadworks ASAP too.
